Leonard ScaggsApril 15, 1928 ~ August 2, 2017 (age 89)
Age 89 of Rubyville, went to be with the Lord Wednesday, August 2, 2017 at SOMC in Portsmouth. He was born April 15, 1928 in Portsmouth to Sherman and Martha Elizabeth (Stapleton) Scaggs. A 1946 graduate of Portsmouth High School, he served his country as a member of the U.S. Navy during WWII. He relocated to Rubyville in 1951. Professionally, he was a maintenance mechanic for the A-Plant, retiring in 1991. Leonard was a member of the Long Run Freewill Baptist Church, served as a Deacon, Sunday school teacher, song leader for 27 years, and enjoyed his church family. He then spent many years as a member of Cedar Street Church of Christ in Christian Union. He was a talented woodworker and used his talents to make furniture and toys. A sports fan, he always rooted for the Reds. He had many interests, but more than anything he loved spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren.
Leonard is survived by his wife, Doris (Ervin) Scaggs; sons, Leonard (Gloria) Scaggs of Rockwood, MI Daniel (Mary) Scaggs of Monroe, MI, Guy (Laura) Scaggs of Lexington, SC; daughters, Penny (Ron) Henthorn of Wheelersburg, Cynthia (Carl) Ervin of Allen, MI, Rebecca (Keith) Johns of Pulaski, TN, Angel (Steve ) Harris of Rosemount; sister, Ruby Blair of Wheelersburg; 24 grandchildren; 34 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by brothers, Vernon, Sherman, and Eugene Scaggs; sister, Hazel Eskins.
Funeral services will be 11:00 a.m. Monday, August 7, 2017 at D.W. SWICK-NELSON FUNERAL HOME in New Boston with Reverend Guy Ervin officiating. Interment will follow at Sunset Memorial Gardens in Franklin Furnace. Friends may call Sunday, August 6, 2017 from 5 – 7 p.m. at the funeral home and one hour before the service on Monday.
